Last week we sowed broad beans. We can't believe how much they've grown in just a week (they are growing almost as fast as Jack's beanstalk in the story Jack and the Beanstalk which we have been doing this week). At this rate we will be paying the giant a visit any day now!!! We also planted Sunflower seeds and discussed their size, shape, colour and texture. We compared the seeds to the broadbeans we have sown and the bulbs. We learned about the necessary requirements for the growth of the seeds (water and sunlight) . Some seeds such as cress seeds will even grow on cotton wool. We will observe the concept of phototropism (plants growing towards the light ) over the coming weeks. We will see that when the plant is turned away from the sunlight, it will turn back towards the sunlight within a day or two. We have already learned about photosynthesis and how plants can make their own food.
We planted a great selection of bulbs each also. We take turns watering them every few days. Now we all have our own broad beans, sunflower seeds and bulbs to take care of. Our class is somewhat akin to a garden at the moment!!
We are even growing our own shamrock - St. Patrick will be happy with us for sure!!
