Easter Art

We love the Easter Bunnies we made today.

Have a look at the Easter chicks we made . They are lovely and colourful and we can't wait to bring them home for Easter

The Easter eggs we coloured and painted look good enough to eat!!

These Easter bookmarks we made will come in handy for our reading.

Spring planting.

Last week we sowed broad beans. We can't believe how much they've grown in just a week (they are growing almost as fast as Jack's beanstalk in the story Jack and the Beanstalk which we have been doing this week). At this rate we will be paying the giant a visit any day now!!! We also planted Sunflower seeds and discussed their size, shape, colour and texture. We compared the seeds to the broadbeans we have sown and the bulbs. We learned about the necessary requirements for the growth of the seeds (water and sunlight) . Some seeds such as cress seeds will even grow on cotton wool. We will observe the concept of phototropism (plants growing towards the light ) over the coming weeks. We will see that when the plant is turned away from the sunlight, it will turn back towards the sunlight within a day or two. We have already learned about photosynthesis and how plants can make their own food.

We planted a great selection of bulbs each also. We take turns watering them every few days. Now we all have our own broad beans, sunflower seeds and bulbs to take care of. Our class is somewhat akin to a garden at the moment!!

We are even growing our own shamrock - St. Patrick will be happy with us for sure!!

Signs of spring and spring art

We have been very busy over the past few weeks with our spring art.

We learned about the life cycle of the frog and made some groovy frogs!! Some tadpoles came to stay in our classroom for a while also.

We made some spring lambs and flowers

  • We went on a nature walk when we had the fine weather and searched for visible signs of spring in our local environment. When we came back to class we made a list of what we had observed. Then we discussed other general signs of spring.
  • Trees grow buds which grow into leaves.
  • Birds start to build their nests.
  • A variety of flowers start to grow again.
  • The farmer ploughs the land.
  • Young animals are born on the farm, e.g. lambs, piglets calves etc.
  • Days start to get longer.
  • Weather gets warmer (in theory!!!)
Here is a picture taken recently of Miss Flaherty feeding a baby lamb in Donegal;

Mother sheep and three baby lambs- aren't they adorable!!

Here is a picture of some buds on a horse chestnut tree growing near our school:
